Does the Name of Your Dog Matter?

As humans, it’s easy for us to understand that our name is our title and identifier. But can your dog comprehend this same concept? The answer is yes and no.

When a dog hears his name, he doesn’t necessarily think, “that’s me!” Instead, your dog learns over time that his name means it’s time to pay attention. With solid training, your dog gets that when you say his time, he needs to look, listen, and even come to you.

All of that being said, does it matter what you call your dog? Not so much.

There are no rules that say your dog must have a certain kind of name. You can go with traditional dog names like Spot, Max, or Fido, or you can pick more “human” names such as Kevin, Alex, or Roger.

But there are some guidelines you can follow when choosing a name to make training a little easier. For example, quick, short names are easy to say and simple to understand. A one-syllable, snappy name like Max catches your dog’s attention efficiently.

A longer name, such as Queen Fluffernutter, is a mouthful that’s difficult to get out quickly and may even be harder to convey to your pup.

Best Boy Pug Names for Male Pugs

The ultimate choice you make from these pug dog names is entirely up to you and your family, but we’re here to offer some inspiration. Pugs are tiny, adorable, charming, and mischievous, which makes naming them a blast.

Check out the list below for some great boy pug names for your male pug.

Percy

Percy seems like an odd name to start our list off, but we think it’s perfect. If you’re a fan of the Disney movie Pocahontas, you know that Percy is the name of the pet dog that belongs to Ratcliffe. Percy also happens to be a pug, so it couldn’t be more perfect.

Teddy

It’s classic, insanely adorable, and easy for your dog to pick up on.

Enough said.

Oliver

There’s something about pugs that just makes us want to give them quirky names. Oliver certainly fits that ticket, and it even comes with a built-in nickname: Ollie.

Peanut

The average adult pug dog only weighs 14 to 18 pounds with a max height of just over one foot. That’s pretty tiny, and what’s a more fitting name for a tiny little male pug than Peanut?

Basco

Did you know that Queen Victoria and her family had a great love of pets? The late British ruler was known as a pug enthusiast and had over 30 in her lifetime.

While it’s hard to say for sure, it’s believed that the Queen’s favorite pug was named Basco, and you can certainly tell everyone that your pug was named after a royal.

Pugsworth

If you’re looking for male pug names that are somehow funny, adorable, and regal at the same time, consider the name Pugsworth. A fun play on the breed’s title, Pugsworth is a charming name that’s not too long and will give your guests a good chuckle for your good boy.

Oscar

The name Oscar means champion warrior, which is pretty amusing given the tiny size of a pug. If you want an ironically strong name for your little fighter, Oscar is a great option.

Bear

What else is a pug if not a teenie tiny little bear who follows you around your house all day? Maybe that’s not an entirely accurate description, but it’s still a stinking cute name.

Duke

We’re not sure how it happened, but the pug breed has quite the royal past. Not only was it a favorite of Queen Victoria and other English royals, but the breed also spent plenty of time in the Chinese imperial household.

It’s only fitting that the name Duke makes an excellent name choice for a boy pug, don’t you think?

Pepper

Do you have a black pug? If so, Pepper is such a cute name that we couldn’t help but include it on our list. It matches your pug’s color, but it also lends itself to a pug’s zesty and spunky personality.

Yoda

Yoda is a hilarious and appropriate name for a male pug. A pug’s wrinkled face bears a close resemblance to the Star Wars character known for his wise sayings and backward dialogue.

Frank

You don’t realize just how many famous pugs there are in world history until you sit down and compile a list of names for pugs.

The name Frank could indicate that you love hotdogs (which happens to be another fantastic dog pun), but it was also the name of the famous pug from the Men in Black movies.

Junior

We’re not mocking the pug for its size; we’re appreciating it. The name Junior is an adorable testament to just how compact this breed is.

Dusty

Dusty is the perfect male pug name for an all-black pug. The name describes the dog’s soot-like fur and has a nice ring.

Moose

We love a good ironic name. A moose is massive, and pugs are obviously not. Therefore, Moose is the perfect pug name.

Other Male Pug Names

Before you go, here are just a few more cute and popular names to consider for your male pug:

  • Cooper
  • Brody
  • Albert
  • Buddy
  • Chip
  • Ford
  • Beau
  • Thor
  • Gus
  • Hamlet

We could go on, but hopefully, our favorite male pug names inspired you!
